It seems like every day the news has another story about some guy who guns down the wife and kids, optionally committing suicide. The question, “why?” is too small to ponder in view of the enormity of the evil shown by these types of mass murderers. Lately these guys who kill their kids and optionally themselves and their wives (or girlfriends) are called “family annihilators”.
Yet, unlike serial killers of strangers, researchers have not really gotten to the “why” of family annihilation. There’s not a lot of data here for a number of reasons — first and foremost, mass murder of strangers sells, not mass murder of your family. So the press doesn’t cover these instances, and there is no public outcry.
Lately though there is public interest and there are some preliminary studies dividing up “family annihilators” according to a mad/sad dichotomy.
Some men are angry: motivated by anger toward the wife, and they extract a revenge killing. The wife is blamed for e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g that could be wrong in the guy’s life. There is no self-examination, no insight. This make sme think that the brain cells related to “self-knowledge” are unplugged. The wife is killed, and the children are murdered as an extension of the wife.
Sometimes the children are murdered just to hurt the wife by destroying that which she loves. No thought for the children as humans is given whatsoever — they are mere instrumentalities in a bigger scheme to extract revenge.
Or, the man is despondent, feeling like a failure, and depressed — and see killing off the wife and the kids as a way to avoid their suffering as well as his own.
Both of these have to do with entitlement and control. The father feels entitled to control the fate of his wife (or girlfriend) and children. (See the National Domestic Violence Fatality Review Initiative newsletter Summer 2006 here at pages 4-7 for a discussion).
I’m focusing on male perpetrators because they are by far the most common, according to a recent report (discussed below, HT: Docuticker, yet again). Although there are a few female family killers, they tend to be truly psychotic or have other serious problems connecting with reality.
Although the Violence Policy Center is a non-profit organization focused on anti-gun legislation, it may be the best source of statistics for homicide-suicides in the US. Some statistics:
- Of the 554 murder-suicide deaths, 234 were suicides and 320 were homicides. Ninety-five percent of murder-suicides were committed by men.
- Nine murder-suicide events occurred in the United States each week during the study period.
- Seventy-three percent of all murder-suicides involved an intimate partner (spouse, common-law spouse, ex-spouse, or girlfriend/boyfriend). Of these, 94 percent were females killed by their intimate partners.
- Forty-five of the homicide victims were children and teens less than 18 years of age. Forty-four children and teens less than 18 years of age were survivors who witnessed some aspect of the murder-suicide.
- Most murder-suicides occurred in the home (75 percent).
Here are some excerpts from the most recent report, “American Roulette: Murder-Suicide in the United States (2008)” (footnotes are deleted, but the source materials are cited in the published report):
Most murderers in murder-suicides are male
In this study, 95 percent of the offenders were male. Other studies analyzing
murder-suicide have found that most perpetrators of murder-suicide are male—more than 90 percent in recent studies of the United States. Another study which only looked at murder-suicides involving couples noted that more than 90 percent were perpetrated by men. This is consistent with homicides in general, in which 89 percent of homicides are committed by male offenders. However, most homicides involve male victims killed by male offenders (65 percent), whereas a male victim being specifically targeted by a male offender in a murder-suicide is relatively rare.CALIFORNIA: In June, Kevin Morrisey, 51, shot and killed his wife, Dr. Mamiko Kawai, 40, and their two children, Nikki, eight, and Kim, six, in a parking lot. Morrisey left a note explaining that the failing business he and his wife owned was at a financial breaking point that could not be remedied. Morrisey purchased the handgun used in the incident less than two months earlier at a gun store near the location of the company. Morrisey’s brother and neighbors claimed he had once been employed by the CIA. A friend said, “They were the family we all want to be a part of.”
Most murder-suicides involve an intimate partner
The most prevalent type of murder-suicide was between two intimate partners, with the man killing his wife or girlfriend. Such events are commonly the result of a breakdown in the relationship. The average age difference between the offender and primary victim was 6.0 years. Overall, the age difference ranged from none to 23 years. (Other studies on fatal violence for spouses have found that there is a greater risk of homicide victimization as the age difference between the husband and wife increases.) In this study, 73 percent of all murder-suicides involved an intimate partner. Of these, 94 percent were females killed by their intimate partners.
CALIFORNIA: In March, 28-year-old Fredy Melara shot and killed his girlfriend of four years, 24-yearold Gabriela Gonzalez. He also shot his two daughters, aged three and 13 months, in the head before killing himself. Family members noted that Melara, a security guard, had been more controlling of Gonzalez after their recent move to the neighborhood. Most multiple-victim murder-suicides involving a male murderer and a large number (three or more) of victims are perpetrated by family annihilators. Family annihilators are murderers who kill their wives/girlfriends and children, as well as other family members, before killing themselves. In many cases, a family annihilator is suffering from depression and has financial or other problems and feels the family is better off dying with him than remaining alive to deal with the problems at hand.

NEBRASKA: In January, Dick Wilkinson, a 62-year-old grandfather shot and killed his daughter, 26, son-in-law, 35, and two grandchildren, three and six, in their beds at the home in which they all lived. There were years of tension between Dick Wilkinson and his daughter, Jaime Lee, which involved allegations of she and her husband Darrell stealing cash from Wilkinson and allegations of abuse between Wilkinson and Jaime. In 2003, the court granted Jaime Lee a protective order against her father for one month before being dropped. The application for the protective order cited that Wilkinson kept guns and knives at home. The family had moved out of the home for a week because tension was so high. They returned the night of the shooting with plans to move out permanently within 48 hours.

I would disagree with one thing you posted, or perhaps implied: it’s a gun issue. Shooting your kids because your wife is leaving because you are a control freak is not a gun issue. As you point out, it’s a mental health issue. It’s an education issue. It’s a social protection/family court dysfunction issue. (Not that I’m crazy about guns, but setting that issue aside).
It’s basically the familiar equivalent of the workplace shooter or the school shooter: same motivation, control and revenge.

I don’t believe it’s only a gun issue or primarily a gun issue. I do think the easy access to guns makes it physically and mentally easier for the perpetrators to commit the murders. If all the guns in the world magically evaporated overnight, men would still find ways to destroy their families, but there might be a better chance of escaping and surviving.

There should be a red phone from the family court system to the ATF (is that who registers guns?) In Canada we have similar issues as exposed by Dr. Pjhill on his television program regarding the use of the fake parental alienation sydrome. Candaian Police normally refuse serevices wto women victims of domestic violense and apply a series of screeening mechanisms which include actually charging a criminal offense to a woman victim who has been beaten by her spouse.
The intention is most ususally to avoid the application of crimonal charges to a male who is involved in a series of criminal activities including the abuse and especailly where the woaman and child are the witnesses and later to cover upp their refusal to provide law enforcment services. We are undergoing the same Americanized two tier form of law enforcement strategy and the privatization of security which has already become an issue in the United states.
In additon we have the same falsifyed assessments especailly in Ontario and in Alberta. The use of mental health desiganations to attack the credibility of victims is as common as it is in the United States. Caharlatans making money by false assessment and fake therapists have built up an industry of munchhausen’s by proxy child abuse in Canada as in the United states. Their evaluations usually relye on the latest trends and many are considered experts by the courts due to their association with the teachers and social workers who lebnd credibility to the abuse of children by the state. As there we have been experiencing serious market manipyulation by the large pharmaceutical companies which is really a world wide probelm now. Traumatized children are ebing discredited by the use of the mental health desigantion of special needs. In addition corporate polutors are being protected form being made to deal with the heavey mental polutants which have the same symotoms as the now porpular Autism desiganation. Children’s services and teacher involved bullying and physical abuse has risen to the level of anarchy in schools and in foster care throughout the Untied States and Canada.
Horrifying and deplorable conditions are slowly being exposed as numerous video capabilities exposing attackers are provided to news outlets. Children exposed to this raw and disgusting physical assault and degrading abuse often display signs of shock and PTSD which is being tretae d as if it were something differenet to get the HMO on the hook and the gov’t officials off it.
The idiocy of the doctrine of positive rights such as the right to law enforcement is at the bottom of this expensive ridiculous and harmfull attack on children. People have a right to recieve the law enforcement we pay for with taxes. I am not a fan of anarchy and I will not move into a gated community no matter how much our Police are corruptted and involved with the protection of criminal offenders nor whether they are criminals themselves. I believe in the rule of law and no person is going to make me believe that lone wolf terrorism is the only answer to the works of these unscupulous greedy people.
We have a government both in Canada and in the United States. We are countries which have laws and constituions and we have a right to expect that we can live by them at any level of poverty and at any level of power. Blood letting is not the answetr a return to democratic rule is and that means we require enforcement by the bodies which protect the rights of the offenders so staunchley to protect the rights of children as well. Women and children who have their credibility attacked in this fashion are being abused severely and at the expense of the taxpayer. I want my tax dollars spent ofn genuine qualified care the Politicians in the USA and Canada who are defending those who attack children must beware they can have their golden idols and power removed. I suppose we can still vote. Health-care which is genuine is a right. We pay for plenty of scams and lies, we can take that money back and use it to pay for our own families and children’s needs and protection. Pharmaceutical companies and polutors can look out for themselves.

Here are the issues we are sharing: Health-care fundiing fraud= In canada as in the third world countries where the statistical data for the Autism scare is being collected the NIMH rules against experimentation on human subjects does not aplly. So dat can be gathered to provide treatement options which are paid for by big pharma such as Johnson and Johnson subsidary Jansen In Romania and in the Ukrane ( child drugging abuse of minority children desiganated as special needs children.) The Canadian attack on children is mostly on child witnesses as it is in the United Sates. Law eforcement officials are now bringing in a form of COMP_ stat a method of refusing services to those persons who would make their programs of arrest look bad. Domestic Violense is an area whwre these persons can assault women since we have no ability to recieve equal protection before the law here. In the third world con=untires the same mode of abuse is being used teh Safer Cities constructed through the United Nations forums spread what can only be considered rape rpoaganda by the use of informative posters information and ideals which place the focus on women’s safety on prfiling the women who are attacked both racially and by religion as well as costume and deed. It is with this so-called prevention campaign that the cultures of the countries and religious ideals through-out the world are debased. The true prevention of the woman and child lies not in profiling victims but in effectively profiling and dealing with offenders would be that the money spent on these campaigns telling person that American culture is better would instead be spent on effective law enforcement not left up to the victims nor related to racial characteristocs but to the actual prevention of crime through effective timely enforcement and focus on the offender and offender types who commit crime in an individual society. Sexual asault is ammater for power and control it is not about the victim it is about the offender and his efforts to gain power.
The next step in the market manipulation campaign is the lobbying for treatement to governement and since the phenomenon of austism has been bumped up with the use of falsifyed data ( we just changed the rules about compiling secondary dat in canda that meens that trauamtized children under the abuse of the Children’s services networks who have recently been apprehended in what can only be called political attacks on racial minorities can be diagnosed inappropraitely and the fact that they are sperated from thri parents and have been systemically abused as they are in Romania can be cut out of the information and the seprate fact of diagnosis and treatement can be faked and provided to Autism Speaks to be used in the United states by the treatement facilities being set up in California and by insurnce giants out to rob children of wht little health-care money they recieve with the fake treatemnts and drugging. Kaiser permanente is only one of these.
The falisified data put forth by Alec Baldwin a spokesperson for the Autism Speaks group beenfits them immnsley because fake Parental Alienation Syndrome can prevent a child from seeing their mother while they are being falsley diagnosed and forced on to drugs as they are privately abused by their fathers in most cases. ( Parental Alienation Syndrome has been banned in four American Sates especially in the case of family violense or as Dr. Phil showed on his talk show in the matter of sexual abuse reported by the child as soon as she is safe. Discrediting children appears to be the goal of this abuse. It is to say that children who report abuse at the time of a separation or divorce are liars, coached by their mothers. Children who are abused in this way are often subjected to PTSD symtoms and do have issues since no one will help them and the ssytem adds their power and authority to that of the abuser making his threats against the mother that much greater ands reinforcing them.
Here in edmonton we have a safer cities program which has increased crime greatly in the area prevention has eaten up all our law enforcement and child protection dollars. Investigations are seldom done at all and the civil system is glutted with unresolved disputes. The deatjh of many women and children here has resulted as well as an increase in forced prostituion human and drug trafficking. Children’s Services likes to place with the offender here. We have a huge number of stae supported men’s rights programs also supported by the Police who wear two hats here: legal advisor (since advocacy especially for children is all but dead and finnished by our new system) and enforcement ( Police don’t enforce domestic violense laws here they force women to submit. Several women who have reported issues with drug addicted offenders involved with organized crime have been subjected to the Florida mental health attack model. Men are considered to be experiencing a mental health issue temporarily. In those insytances the women are murdered soon after. We have a ring of body dumps around our coprporate limits. Women here are called prostitues only according to race. Genuine prostitues actually clearly enhgaged in the sex rtrade are not called prostitues fater ther death and they usually have not been arrested although they have adds etc displaying their wares and are obviously involved with criminals and crimaianl actibities. Even women of other origens killed in gang scuffles we have in our streets every day now are not called prostitues. Only Aborigenal women even the most innocent children are referred to as prostitues and referred to the specail task force devided by race. Rape prorpaganda Rwanda genocide stuyle is being used here. This is similar to the propaganda attached to the black and hispanic communities in the United states. ther e are many persons who are having issues with drug gang and organized crime involvement and many more who are not. The issue here is that Hispanics light skinned blacks and several aisian gropups all look as if they moight be Aborigenal and because of teh propaganda machine they are referred to as Aborigenal no matter who they are, then privacy laws protect the identification of their racial origen once they are arrested.
The racial bias reaches into the courts where obvious crimes are charged in Emergency Protection Order Hearings and the Justices do not demand that testimony nor information be given to the Police nor that an investigation be carried out. If a drug gang involved nurse is accused by her recent common-law spouse of threatening to kill him and of the theft of drugs and opf losing toiuch with reality regularly no one looks into it. The Police take no action. Then a year and a half later a drug lab at their home blows up a city block and the police stae there has been no meth lab in the press. They cover up for their activities thus. Organized crime and corruption appears to be very much settled in here and the Police are involved in it so deeply that it will take some time to deal with the effects of their inaction if we can ever get our provincial government out of office. We have to wait a long time before we can get in to vote and it will be a serious issue if we don’t get them out. We had an excellent health-care system but they are ruining it day by day with cuts and privatization.
The best thing to do as regards research in your area is to find out if you have the same problem we do as our oil is sold to the Middle east and Korea they bought a lot of control with it and so we have some serious polution prblems here. The upswing in gas wells has been an issue also. Our children are being poisoned and no ammount of attachment therapy is going to cure that. Paid for by the governement or not by tax payers anyway. I suggest that testing include the issue of heavey metals especially mercury and arsenic as well as lead and then chemical poisoning such as tuolane and many of the two hundered chemicals caqused by the burning of gas and or mining and oil spills in the environemnt. There are going to be some issues in Florida and throughout the eastern seaboard and it won’t be autism I believe it never was…
So this is where the false informatoion regarding treatement options for Autism is being gathered. It is coming from a community under assault and being refused Police services.
